SANTA CLARA COUNT, California (KRON) – A coronavirus epidemic at Costco in Sunnyvale has led to an investigation into four different Costco locations in Santa Clara County.
Following reports of COVID-19 clusters at various cost centers, Santa Clara County launched an investigation into four Costco stores.
So far, nine Sunnyvale Costco employees have tested positive for the coronavirus, but there are fears that the number will still increase if the infection is not reduced.
A spokesman for Teamsters Union Local 853 said employees were worried.
As of Thursday, July 30, the county can confirm the following breakdown of cases:
- Gilroy: 6 cases between July 24 and 30
- Mountain View: 6 cases between 1
- San Jose – Senter Road: 8 cases between July 17 and 22
- Sunnyvale: 13 cases between 23 and 26 July
The health department confirms that it works with Coscto, based on a 7-point checklist that calls for reporting, contact tracking, communication and sanitation.
The health department confirmed that at least 9 workers tested positive for coronavirus at Costco on Sunnyvale Road Station. Workers, customers and the Workers’ Union are concerned as action is being taken to limit the further spread of the infection.
Santa Clara County works closely with Costco to ensure the safety of workers and customers anywhere.
Preliminary investigation shows that Costco complies with social distancing and other protocols, officials say, and many of the cases were caused by community-based transmission and most likely not by internal transmission among employees.
As part of the county’s review of Costco’s procedures and protocols, the county will provide additional guidance if needed.
Santa Clara County is ready to assist Costco in establishing close contacts and advising on appropriate disinfection measures, ensuring compliance with appropriate testing protocols as well as measures to prevent workplace shifts.
Costco customers must continue to follow protocols, including wearing face coverage and participating in social distancing.
