A Colorado couple is battling a bear with her bare fists and a baseball bat on Monday night, authorities said, chasing the animal and her toddler out of their home.

A 71-year-old man comes across his mother's mother as she investigates strange noises she hears while watching TV with her husband, according to a Colorado Parks and Wildlife release.

John Johnson has discovered the source of the noise: the bear and her child ate bread in the kitchen, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office reported to KCNC-TV.

"That was growling, I was growling," Johnson says at the station. "We had a lot of relationships between the two."

Then the bear attacked. Describing the fight as a boxing match, Parks and Wildlife said Johnson received cuts to his face, chest and both hands.

His wife George Field told the station that she was scared of his life. She rushed to the kitchen and hit the bear several times with a bat.

"All I can remember is that there was a big brown spot in front of me," Field said. "I've been empowered. I've never been this strong. I hit this bear as hard as I could … you'd think I was crazy Louisville."

Then the bear and her toddler fled, parks and wildlife said, ending the attack, which began around 8:45 a.m. in Pine, about 45 miles southwest of Denver.

The parks and wildlife searched for the bear and euthanized the bear the next morning, according to agency rules. A forensic investigation will determine if it was the same bear, according to a news release, because bears that attack and injure humans have been euthanized in Colorado. Cube not found.

The medics treated Johnson at the scene, the agency reported. The couple told KCNC that their bird feeders may have attracted the bear.
