COVID-19 infections in the Kaiser outbreak associated with costumes nearly 100



The number of people infected with COVID-19 due to a Christmas outbreak associated with a suit in the emergency department of Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center is close to 100.

Kaiser said Wednesday that 74 employees who worked on Dec. 25 and 15 patients “related to Dec. 25” took tests. An emergency worker died on December 25 as a result of complications from COVID-19.

“Out of respect for the privacy of patients and families, we have no additional information to provide,” Kaiser said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are for those affected by this terrible loss. We provide support to our employees during this difficult time.”


When the first infections were reported in hospital emergency department staff, a hospital spokesman told the New York Times that an inflatable Christmas tree carried briefly by an employee could have worsened the spread of the virus.

Suits like this work through a battery-operated fan that injects air into the suit and gives it shape. The suit may have spread droplets in the air.

“Any exposure, if it happened, would be completely innocent and completely accidental, as the individual has no symptoms of COVID and only seeks to lift the spirits of the people around them during very stressful times,” Kaiser San Jose Senior Vice President Irene Chavez told the Associated Press in early January.

Kaiser said Wednesday that the incident is still under investigation. “Working with our infectious disease specialists, we continue to investigate the outbreak to determine potential causes and use contact tracking to notify and test all exhibits, based on the CDC and public health guidelines,” Kaiser said. “Given the prevalence of COVID-19 in our communities, it is often difficult to determine the specific exposure leading to COVID-19 infection.”
