New York Governor Andrew Cuomo will receive a $ 25,000 salary increase in 2021 under legislation passed in 2019, while the salaries of other New York employees will remain stagnant throughout the year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
A report recently published by the New York Commission on Legislative, Judicial and Enforcement Compensation stated that it “would not recommend any increases in benefits for the next four years for New York judges, legislators or the executive.”
The report cites the coronavirus pandemic and its “unprecedented challenges” as the main reason why raising salaries for officials would not be reasonable.

“The budget ministry predicts that the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to cause a loss of $ 60.5 billion in 2024,” the report said. “And in the short term, the country’s unemployment rate is expected to average 11.4%, which is ‘a level higher than any record since the current methodology for calculating the percentage was introduced.’
The report added that the country was in an “extremely precarious fiscal position”.
Cuomo, who is now chairman of the National Association of Governors (NGA) after Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan stepped down, was at the forefront of asking the federal government for help with state budget deficits during the pandemic.
“Because of Congress’ inaction, the ability of state and local governments to provide critical services to the American people is now in serious jeopardy, along with the jobs of millions working in schools, libraries, police and fire departments, hospitals, roads and transit agencies. other units of state and local government, “a joint statement from the NGA and several other state and local government associations said in August.

“Only the federal government, with its central bank, the world’s reserve currency and unlimited credit, has the power to avoid these devastating consequences. It is unscrupulous that our federal leaders have not acted,” the statement continued.
But amid struggles in New York and other states, Cuomo’s salary will still increase from $ 225,000 in 2020 to $ 250,000 in 2021. This is the result of a resolution from a preliminary promise passed by the legislature, which noted the governor of New York and a lieutenant governor have received the same salary since 1999.
Fox News contacted the governor’s office in New York for comment and did not receive an immediate response.
The governor’s salary will not be the only income Cuomo makes, of course. This year, Cuomo released a book about his work with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which he said the New York Post said part of the proceeds would go to a charity that helps fight the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
