Dancing With the Stars 8 summary: Got the right pair?

The Ballroom Dancing With the Stars has had an elephant for several weeks and its name is Sean Spicer.

That doesn't mean digging into Spicer's dancing skills (though it's not entirely an inaccurate comparison, depending on the week). Rather, I am referring to Spicer's continued presence on the ABC series, which has started to cause shock and disappointment as he remains on the show, despite his low scores and minimal improvements. For the past two weeks, Sylor Brinkley-Cook (a well-marked front fixture) and Caramo Brown (who has made huge strides) have been both shoes, while Spicer is just in the bottom two.

Given Spicer's lack of dance experience and polarization in the White House, I predicted he would be the first this season, even with an experienced professional like Lindsay Arnold next to him. But while earning ratings far below those of his competitors, Spiser seems to have a loyal fanbase whose votes contribute to the judges' numbers. (And DWTS is obviously as big a popularity contest as it is a legitimate talent show – though it shouldn't be.)

The question is: did Spicer's supporters show him enough love in Monday's dance – out of an episode to keep it moving? Before we get to the results, let's break down all the performances of the evening:

Sean Spicer and pro Jenna Johnson (Jazz) – Speaking of Spicer, he was the first this week (with Jenna Johnson topping out for Lindsay after her mother-in-law passed away a few days ago). Sean's time was still everywhere and his movements were not smooth, but I was relieved to see that he at least went through this sequence of kicks without incident. Also, the judges apparently decided to stop hiding their disappointment that Sean was still on the show, making remarks like, "The mermaid had better legs in this dance!" And "Even from Nemo has a better sense of direction. "Harsh! (But fair?) Judge Score: 20/30

Lauren Alaina and pro Gleb Savchenko (Live) – Oh man, I so much wanted this jive to be perfect. To Lauren's credit, she doesn't allow the mistakes to derail her remaining performance and (many!) Sections of this dance that didn't include the mistakes were so fun and cheeky. But it all fell apart when Lauren and Gleb introduced themselves close to the judges' table – not just for a second, but for an extended combination, with Lauren staring completely out at sea. She recovered fine and didn't look too bland, but the mistakes were bright. Judges Score: 24/30

Kel Mitchell and Professional Whitney Carson (Salsa) – When "That's How We Do It" by Montel Jordan is your soundtrack, you can't went astray – but Kel and Whitney still delivered salsa, which was precise, fast and massively entertaining. I wish these two had a little more chemistry, but Kel's technical skill has become one of the strongest in the competition (and hey, they still have 10, so I clearly don't know anything.) Refereeing : 28/30

Ali Brooke and Pro Sasha Farber – I spent most of this issue wrong, thinking that Ally's single was called "Fire", only to learn eventually that is called "Higher." D & # 39; oh. However, this passive prowess was fire, from the moment Ali left that microphone stand and joined Sasha in the choreography. Can we talk about that crazy spin Ali made over Sasha's legs? Or that heavy drum section with her fabulous whips? Or the rest, which was equally flawless? Judge Score: 30/30

Hannah Brown and Pro Alan Bursten (Quickstep) – Last week, Hannah wrote an emotional behind-the-scenes entry in the Bustle diary, and it broke my heart to learn she had never enjoyed in his time on DWTS . That is why it was so exciting to watch her kill this quick step; as soon as she played a little air guitar at the beginning of the dance, Hannah seemed much calmer than she had been weeks ago, and that carefree confidence remained for the whole number. As for her foot? She didn't miss a single step in this very fast, very complicated routine – and we can all agree that she deserved the perfect result, right? Judge Score: 29/30

Kate Flannery and Pro Pasha Pashkov (Lives) – Kate remains a pleasure to watch every week, and her late sister's homage has been joyous and festive. Unfortunately, Kate's time was short for some parts of this routine, and she seemed to get into her head every time an error occurred. Judges Score: 24/30

James Van Der Bake and Pro Emma Slater (Contemporary) – This Contemporary Had Everything : Crazy Chemistry! Modifying, funny cover song from the 80's! Elevators that upset me a little! James and Emma were competing to bond for most of this season, but the love and admiration they seemed to share in this contemporary was simply wonderful. Judge Score: 30/30

After performing individually, the couples were paired for Monday's dance meetings. Here's how it works: Two duos face the same dance floor, performing in the same style, to the same song at the same time. The judges then selected a winning pair from each match, which then received two bonus points added to their total for the night. (James and Emma, who earned the highest cumulative score in the last week, gained immunity from dance, although they were still eligible to be in the bottom two and / or be eliminated.)

First up, Kel and Whitney triumphed over Ali and Sasha in the jive; then Kate and Pasha defeated Sean and Jenna in a cha-cha; and finally, Hannah and Alan Salsa-Ed Loren and Gleb in an insanely entertaining final dance-off.

And now, the results:
