DANNY MURPHY: James Madison’s Euro-confident hopes were dashed after his breakthrough at Cowid … his antics will make it much easier for English boss Gareth Southgate to choose between him and his rivals in the middle
- James Madison killed his hopes of making the England team for the euro
- Madison was dropped by Brendan Roger after breaking Cowid’s rules
- That won’t be the only reason he dropped out, but it makes it easier for Southgate
- England is blessed with so many opportunities to attack in this area of the field
James Madison dashed his hopes of making the England team for the euro. Gareth Southgate is the type of manager who likes the full package: the ability to do the job on the field and deal with themselves in the right way outside of it.
Madison’s involvement in violating Kovid’s rules at a home party will not be the only reason he is missed, but it makes it much easier for Southgate to choose between him and his rivals. This is a man who withdrew from the duty of England due to illness and was depicted in a casino. Now this. It just doesn’t go well when you then face it against Mason Mount.
England is blessed with so many opportunities to attack in this area of the field. If there is not much between their abilities, the way you behave may show that you are lagging behind others. Madison has just closed the door on her opportunity, which is unfortunate because she is a super talent.

I think Madison is the player who will be fired to make amends in the FA Cup semi-final. Most players with a sense of loyalty or disappointment in themselves want to react and repay the fans for cheating the club.
It was an idiotic thing and another chance for people to accuse a footballer of thinking he was above the rules. I was there, I did it. To live in the bubble of fame and fortune and think that the rules do not apply to me. You think you can walk on water. But now he is punished, it is time to move on.
Madison was released by Leicester boss Brendan Roger after breaking Cowid’s rules
Breaking the rules won’t be the only reason he dropped out, but it makes it easier for Southgate
You have to give credit to Brendan Rodgers for the way he handled the situation. We have seen many times when players have done something wrong, but still find themselves on the bench or in the game. Rodgers decided to put them aside, which would be disastrous for the country, especially with a player like Madison, who can create magical moments, but he wants to set a standard for his club and team.
I think he understood it correctly. One game is enough. Some fans have said they want him to miss the FA Cup semi-final as well. Where do you stop? If you ban players for one or two games, someone will expect three or four. And what would you achieve? That didn’t help Leicester win a massive game in their history. Rodgers sent his message.
This game is a great opportunity for both Leicester and Southampton to stay one match away from the FA Cup final. Their defeat by West Brom was really bad.
Currently, Southgate is blessed with so many opportunities to attack in this area of the field
Leicester are the favorites. They have better players, better squad and have shown more consistency this season. The Saints were in such bad shape in the Premier League that it is difficult to reverse the momentum. They have to somehow turn this against Leicester’s side, which, when they do, is full of energy, well-trained and has a clear tactical plan.
But the Saints have yet to concede a goal in the FA Cup. Sometimes teams can produce in one-off matches, freed from the pressure of the Premier League, without the threat of relegation.
They have to present a hell of a show. Danny Ings will always provide a goal threat, and the ability of James Ward-Prose from the kits is a super weapon that can get you out of the mud for a moment.
Southampton can split the FA Cup and the Premier League. Leicester can’t. For them, this is also extremely important for their self-confidence in their remaining league matches. Their performance against West Ham was not great and they are still working to make sure they don’t miss the top four again.
