This week, Dell launches its Inspiron line of laptops in 2021
If you’re unfamiliar with Dell’s branding, Inspiron is its budget range of laptops – but in this context, “budget” means a solid laptop design aimed at price-sensitive customers, but not cheap things at the bottom of the price. In these Inspiron models you will find the same Intel i3, i5 and i7 processors as in the more expensive Dell Latitudes, HP Probooks, etc.
2021 Inspiron 13
In most of the world, the Inspiron 13 is available in one color – “Platinum Silver with Tonal Lock”. Chinese customers also receive the Peach Dust option (also with tone blocking). The Inspiron has a 13.3-inch display with a resolution of 1920×1200 or 2560×1600 16:10 and is available with a choice of Intel i3-1125G4, i5-11300H or 17-11370H processor and (for i5 and i7 models) an optional Nvidia GPU GeForce MX450. The weight starts at 1.25 kg (2.75 pounds) – we are not shown a full set of weights, but we do not see options that could also overwhelm things.
All models feature Intel Wi-Fi 6 2×2, Bluetooth 5.1, a fingerprint reader integrated in the power key, and a 720p integrated webcam. The two USB-C ports on the left side are certified by Thunderbolt 4.0 and offer PowerDelivery and DisplayPort options. RAM is 8GiB or 16GiB on board, and storage ranges from 128GB M.2 NVMe to 2TB M.2 NVMe.
Users who are particularly picky about keyboards should take a look at the first photo above – all of this year’s Inspiron models include a compressed arrow key layout, which we know some of you aren’t as fond of.
Prices for the Inspiron 13 start at $ 600 and these models are now available in North America.
2021 Inspiron 14
For the most part, the Inspiron 14 is an Inspiron 13 with a slightly larger display – it offers a similar range of Core i3 / Core i5 / Core i7, with an optional MX450 graphics processor on the Core i5 / Core i7 models. It offers the same two colors – only one of which, Platinum Silver, is available outside China – and the same port layout. The only screen resolution of the Inspiron 14 is standard 1080p, with brightness options of 250 nits or 300 nits. The RAM is up to 32GB and the memory is up to 1TB M.2 NVMe.
One key difference to note is which The Core i3 CPU is available on 14. The Inspiron 13 offers the relatively fast i3-1125G4, with four cores / eight threads and a Passmark rating of 10,327. The Inspiron 14’s i3-1115G4 has only two cores / four threads and a Passmark score of only 6,443.
The Inspiron 14 has an option for the Ubuntu operating system, unlike the 13, but is listed in the specification as Ubuntu (select countries), so we’re not sure about availability. Of course, even if the Ubuntu model is not available in your country, this is an almost certain guarantee that you can install Ubuntu myself without any unnecessary problems.
The starting weight of the Inspiron 14 is 1.46 kg (3.22 lbs). Prices start at $ 550, and availability in North America begins on May 4.
2021 Inspiron 14 2-in-1
The Inspiron 14 is also available in a 2-in-1 model – which means that this version can be folded completely flat, with a keyboard pressed under the display, for use in tablet mode. The Inspiron 14 2-in-1 has a different port layout from the 13- and 14-shell models – the DC socket replaces one of the USB-C ports, and there is an additional USB-A port on the left. The arrangement of the processor is also different – at the bottom there is the same relatively fast 4c / 8t Core i3-1125G4, which we saw in Inspiron 13. From then on, things get more complicated.
The Core i5-1135G7 and Core i7-1165G7 models have optional GeForce MX350 graphics processors – which seems like a dubious upgrade from the built-in Iris Xe graphics of these models. The MX350 has slightly higher performance, but very little – and adds power consumption and heat generation, which may not be worth it.
In addition to the i5-1135G7 and i7-1165G7 options, we have AMD Ryzen 5 5500U and Ryzen 7 5700U models. The battle between Tiger Lake and Ryzen 5000 mobile is much closer than most Intel scenarios compared to AMD – Intel has a significant lead in single-core performance, but (as usual) breaks down at multi-threaded loads. AMD also has a slight lead in the performance of the integrated graphics processor – but thanks to the Iris Xe, Intel is probably not far behind for the first time to make a difference.
The Inspiron 14 2 in 1 weights start at 1.5 kg (3.31 lbs) with a 41WHr battery or 1.56 kg (3.43 lbs) with a 54WHr battery. Prices start at $ 730, and availability in North America begins on May 4.
2021 Inspiron 15
Dell’s new Inspiron 15 offers options for Intel Core i3-1125G4, i5-1135G7 and i7-1165G7 processors. The Core i5 and Core i7 can be ordered with the optional GeForce MX350 discrete graphics processor. The Inspiron 15’s single USB Type-C port offers PowerDelivery and Video options. RAM is available from 4GiB to 32GiB, and storage ranges from 128GB M.2 NVMe to 1TB M.2 NVMe.
The Inspiron 15 has a 250-nip touch display option and two 250-nit and 300 nit brightness non-touch options. All have 1080p FHD. Inspiron 15 also shows the options of the Ubuntu operating system in “selected countries”. Available in Mist Blue or Platinum Silver.
The Inspiron 15 models will start at $ 550, with availability in North America starting on May 4.
2021 Inspiron 16 Plus
The Inspiron 16 Plus is a new form factor and you seem to need to be careful about it. 16 Plus offers Intel 11th generation Core H-series processors – most likely the same ones introduced in the Inspiron 13, but we still don’t know for sure – up to 32GiB RAM and additional graphics processors ranging up to the GeForce RTX 3060 mobile. The only display available is a 16.0 “3K (3072×1920) non-touch, with a brightness of 300 nits.
Storage ranges from 256GB M.2 NVMe to 2TB M.2 NVMe. Wi-Fi is Intel’s Wi-Fi 6 AX201 2×2, and A / V is booming over smaller models with a dual digital microphone, tuned speakers with Waves MaxxAudio sound processing and temporary noise reduction. This model offers a 3-cell 56WHr or 6-cell 86WHr battery; we still do not know the weight of these systems.
Unfortunately, despite its size, the Inspiron 16 Plus still has a compressed layout of the arrow keys, which many Arsians strongly dislike. But with a starting price of just $ 950, we’re potentially excited about it as a budget gaming laptop – although we’re waiting with bated breath to see how much more expensive the RTX 3060-equipped models will be. North America on June 3.
