“Secretary Pompeo has turned the State Department into a hand of Trump’s campaign, and he’s not even trying to cover it up,” Engel said in a statement. “After trying to block almost all oversight efforts by the Foreign Affairs Committee over the past two years, Mr Pompeo is more than happy to help Senate Republicans develop their conspiracy theories about Bidens. I want to see the full record of what the department sent to the Senate, and I want the American people to see it. “
The chamber’s committee is seeking 16,080 pages of documents that the State Department has provided to Senate Republicans related to former Vice President Hunter Biden and deals with Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings.
The committee provided Pompeo by 7 August to comply with the request.
The documents relate to a GOP Senate study involving the House Finance Committee and the Homeland Security and Government Committee, focusing on a widely discredited account that during the Obama administration Biden tried to remove Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin, for to prevent the investigation of Burism and his son’s role in the company.
Shokin was fired in 2016 on allegations of corruption, which included criticism that he failed to fulfill his investigative obligations to companies such as Burisma to verify that they were complying with the law.
