Derailment of Chicago trains on the Red Line near Bryn Mawr halts CTA service north of Belmont

CHICAGO (WLS) – The CTA red line service has been suspended on the north side of Chicago after the train derailed near Bryn Mawr station, the transit agency reported.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, a wheel on the South Purple Line train derailed shortly after 6 p.m.

Firefighters have been seen helping the 24 passengers on board get off the train safely. No injuries were reported.

The CTA reported that Red Line trains run only between 95th Street and Belmont. The Purple Line Express service has also been suspended, but the local Purple Line service is still available between Howard and Linden.

As the CTA is working to restore the service, there are buses between Belmont and Howard. Riders are encouraged to provide additional travel time and look for alternative routes.
