Derrick Lewis already has the most knockouts in UFC heavyweight history, but he says after throwing a few more pounds, he can be even more terrifying when the next one steps into the octagon.
The Houston-born closed the UFC Vegas 6 card on Saturday night with a punitive performance, Alexei Oleynik finished with vicious blows in the second round. Before the match, Lewis raised his training regime and although he tipped the scales by 265 pounds, he looked in better shape than almost any of his previous matches in the UFC.
According to Lewis, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his potential now that he is approaching his career in fighting with a little more focus and discipline.
“I owe it to the fans,”
In the past, Lewis has said he is not the most dedicated fighter when it comes to his training. But now he wants to change that.
With plans to lose another 15 or 20 pounds before competing again, Lewis expects an even better performance when he returns to the UFC for his next match.
“I really eat whatever I want and I just trained this camp for much longer than 30 minutes,” Lewis said. “We just train a lot more. I still eat bass [fish], still eating Popeye and things like that. I just trained more. I will certainly be much faster, much more agile, much more aggressive and all.
“I definitely need to lose 15, 20 pounds to feel comfortable there and you’ll really see something scary of me for sure.”
While his immediate plans include returning home to see his family, followed by diets and exercise to gain weight, Lewis knows that as a №4 heavyweight, there are many opportunities for his next match.
He mentioned names like Francis Nganu and Alistair Overeem as potential opponents, but had barely left the octagon before heavyweight counterpart Curtis Blades called him.
Judging by his comments, Lewis would gladly accept this challenge.
“It would be ideal to fight Curtis after that,” Lewis said. “All he will do is try to catch and hold me and try to win a decision. He will not try to finish me off. If he tries to finish me off, that’s fine, but I believe I can take Curtis down and punish him on the ground.
“Yes, put that on the title. Make headlines, move on. Enter it. These are titles right there. I’ll take down Curtis Blades and finish it.
