On Tuesday night, the Detroit Lions flew to Rams, the college’s director, intelligence officer Brad Holmes, for a second interview about the general manager’s vacancy. He became the first candidate to give a second interview and establish himself as a finalist for the job.
But according to MMQB’s Albert Breer, he is not alone. Brewer says there are at least four other candidates the Lions hope to recruit for personal tracking: Colts Assistant General Manager Ed Dodds, Professional Vice President / Assistant Director General Terry Fontenot, Jeff College Vice President / Assistant General Manager Ireland and the Viking assistant George Patton.

As for the duo of Saints from Fontenot and Ireland, at least Fontenot is considered a finalist for the work of the Atlanta Falcons, which reportedly narrowed its search to Fontenot, Holmes and former Texas GM Rick Smith. Ireland was interviewed by the Panthers last week, but there is no follow-up yet.
The Lions will also compete for Patton. The Vikings’ assistant general manager had a second interview with the Denver Broncos on Tuesday when the search was over. Detroit may keep pace with Patton’s acquaintance with Chris Spielman, given that he works side by side with his brother Rick, who is a Viking CEO.
One interesting note for these finalists is that the Lions will not be able to interview Fontenot and Ireland until the Saints are eliminated from the playoffs or until the week between the Conference Games and the Super Bowl, whichever comes first. Patton and Dodds, however, are available to bring each time.
The reason why the Lions managed to attract Holmes for a second interview, even though the Aries are still in the playoffs, was explained by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press on Tuesday:
A quick explanation at the bottom of this story: Brad Holmes can interview the Lions in person because he is not in the Aries building (he lives in Atlanta). If the lions want to interview one of the Saints’ boys again, they have to wait until they lose https://t.co/gu4NXU7mkW

So, if the Lions really consider Fontenot or Ireland as a serious candidate, this search may not be over for a few more weeks. Last week, team president Rod Wood said that if they had to wait for the right candidate, they would.
“We would be willing to wait if it was necessary to find the right person, yes. There is no deadline in our process. “
