If you’re a big Jeff Okuda fan, you knew this day was coming. The second year of the corner defender of Detroit Lions made it quite obvious that he wants to undergo a change of shirt number from his rookie season, in which he played number 30. Well, it seems that this is happening very soon.
As Jeff Riesden of Lions Wire first pointed out, the Detroit Lions appear to be selling Jeff Okuda’s T-shirt number 23 on it.
Although this change of number has not yet been confirmed by the team – its number remains 30 on the official Lions website – there are many reasons to believe that this will be the new Okudah number. First, team president Rod Wood said earlier this week that Okuda had been out of the Lions̵
“He comes in regularly and I think he feels energetic about the new coaching staff, as well as a number of other players,” Wood said.
We also know that Okuda contacted Darius Slay before he was summoned, and the two have at least a friendly relationship. Maybe it’s no coincidence that Okuda and Slay started with the number 30 before moving on to the number 23.
But if you have an itchy trigger finger this Easter Sunday, a word of warning before you start buying your next Lions T-shirt for the next five years. Kansas City bosses have proposed a change to the rules this year that will allow for corner discounts – which currently can only be worn between numbers 20 and 49 – the ability to wear numbers between 1-19. Okuda was number 1 in college and high school. Also, keep in mind that lions can make some of the same changes as early as next year.
