Quantum computing expert Andrew Fersman is convinced that quantum attacks will pose a threat to the security of bitcoins (BTC) in the future.
In a video, Fursman emphasizes that the enormous computing potential of quantum machines may be able to compromise the security of Bitcoin.
“It has been mathematically proven that if you have a device that looks like the kind of quantum computers that people want to build, then you will be able to decipher this information much better than would ever be possible with classic devices.”
Fursman argues that no matter when quantum computers come of age, a solution must be found.
“Whether quantum computers come out tomorrow or in five years or in ten years, they can be cryptographically useful. These devices will be able to do something you may not want if you are someone who keeps a secret …
While Fersman says quantum machines could jeopardize Bitcoin’s cryptography, he notes that this will not happen soon.
“We may actually need significantly more qubits (quantum bits or a unit of quantum information) than are currently available. And as I somehow hinted, maybe we are in the place where the biggest computers we build today, in the end, really become the basis of a logical qubit for one of these big devices …
So, if we need a thousand times more qubits, then we can have in a few years, you have to think about the growth of these things both in terms of error correction and the number of logical qubits you have to move forward. …
And I have to say that some people even determine the number of millions you may need. So we are definitely not right around the corner from that. It won’t happen next week. “
