Shaping Britney Spears, a documentary about her conservatism, airs on FX and Hulu on February 5 (watch it here). This will be the sixth episode of The New York Times Presents series’ first season.
For more than a decade, Spears has been the subject of conservation work, with a judge appointing a guardian to manage the financial and personal affairs of someone who is incapacitated or unable to make those decisions on his or her own. Her father, James “Jamie” Spears, was her conservative until the fall of 2019, when he resigned due to health problems and was replaced by a licensed conservative.
Last year, the pop star said in a court statement that she was “strongly opposed”
A growing group of supporters who are concerned about Spears and question the terms and motives of her conservatism are advocating for the pop star under the hashtag #FreeBritney.
According to a description of the stand-alone documentary, “People close to Britney Spears and her conservation lawyers are now reevaluating her career as she fights with her father in court over who can control her life.” A short new teaser from the episode discusses the pop star’s conservatism and the singer’s objections to her father as her conservative, and also includes thoughts of people involved in the #FreeBritney movement.
