The study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine in mid-September and looked at two years of sleep for more than 120,000 people. The average night’s sleep was found to last about 6 hours and 47 minutes. However, he also found that “shorter sleep duration and greater sleep variability are also associated with a higher BMI.” (Related: 100 most unhealthy foods on the planet.)
The participant’s sleep patterns are tracked in applications and fitness trackers such as Apple Watch and Fitbit. Snoozes were not included in the study and height and weight were reported on their own. Other health conditions were not taken into account. The study notes that people who wear tracking watches or devices tend to be “higher socioeconomic status, younger and healthier, and our results may not be generalized to other populations.”
The authors also say that “Although we cannot determine the direction of association from the results of our study, these findings provide additional support for the notion that sleep patterns are related to weight management and overall health.”
There is another reason why sleeping even just 15 minutes less a night can have negative effects on weight loss. Simply waking up longer means you can consume more calories. Getting less zzz is also associated with a jump in ghrelin hormone and a drop in leptin hormone, which causes hunger. It’s also harder to let go of appetite when we’re tired, according to CNN.
