Next year, the G-7 gathering of leaders in the world's largest economies will be held at President Trump's golf resort outside of Miami, White's acting chief of staff Mick Mulvani's home, it said Thursday.
"We have used many of the same criteria used by past administrations," Mulvany said. He later said it was almost as if the resort had been built for the purpose of the event.
The decision by the Trump administration to host the Doral International Summit will surely fuel the ongoing dispute over Trump's decision to retain ownership of his businesses while being president.
"We know the environment we live in," Mulvani said, adding that Trump is ready to take notice.
Mulvani notes that Doral is Trump's proposal, which officials follow. He said "no" when asked if it was better to avoid self-violence, repeatedly pointing to potential cost savings. He stated that he would not share documents about the decision-making process.
Trump was interested in holding the Doral Summit in August while attending this year's gathering in Biarritz, France.
"We haven't found anything that even comes close to competing with him," Trump told reporters. He mentioned the proximity of the resort to Miami International Airport, ample parking and private booths to receive a delegation from each country. "There are huge areas, many hundreds of acres, so we can handle anything that happens.
According to Trump's financial disclosures, he earned 76 million dollars from Doral in 2018. But as a sign of how the Trump brand has struggled since becoming a political figure, this is a significant drop from the nearly $ 116 million the resort has earned for it in 2016.
While Trump resigned from the Trump Organization before becoming president, he never s refuses to participate in various businesses that include golf clubs, hotels and office buildings around the world.
Courts move several lawsuits claiming Trump violates a provision in the Constitution that forbids the president from accepting gifts and payments from foreign and state governments.
Since Trump secured the GOP nomination in 2016, his properties have become preferred venues for Republicans to hold fundraisers and political events. Federal Election Commission records show Trump's reelection campaign, GOP commissions and candidates spent millions on Trump properties in 2019.
Mulvey said Thursday that he himself was initially skeptical of the idea, but said that the event would be "drastically cheaper" if held in Doral. He said Trump had "made it clear" that he would not win from the resort hosting the summit.
Trump's international properties are also under control. This summer, US Air Force acknowledged that hundreds of service personnel were staying at Trump's Scottish resort during refueling stops there. Vice President Pence was also in control of his stay at Trump's Irish Golf Resort during an official visit to Ireland.
