Driver kills 1, injures 5 more pedestrians in Southeast Portland, police say

A driver hit and killed a man and injured at least five others in a block of 20 blocks in Southeast Portland before crashing and fleeing Monday afternoon, witnesses said.

According to the Portland Fire and Rescue Service, a pedestrian was hit and critically injured in a “major road accident” on Southeast Street Stark and 19th Avenue in the Buckman neighborhood. A spokesman for the fire service said five more were in critical condition.

Portland Police Officer Derek Carmon told a news conference that officers responded after someone said he was near Laurelhurst Park shortly after 1

p.m. hitting other cars and pedestrians.

Carmon said the crime scene stretched from Laurelhurst Park on 33rd Avenue to 18th Avenue and Stark Street and asked anyone who saw debris or had videos along the area to contact police.

He said the suspect, whom he could not immediately identify, crashed his car and fled and was stopped by several members of the community who saw him trying to escape from the scene. He said bystanders held the suspects until police arrived.

One victim, a 70-year-old woman, was taken to Oregon University of Health and Science Hospital in critical condition, according to a hospital spokesman. Police confirmed that the woman later died.

According to witness Larry Wolfe, the woman came to meet him for a meeting on the corner of Washington Street and 19th Avenue when he saw her hit by a car and screaming. Wolfe said he walked toward her, then saw the car come back and hit her again. The car then made a U-turn and headed for 19th Avenue toward Stark Street, Wolfe said.

Many ambulances responded in the area. A news release from the Portland Police Department confirmed that the vehicle hit pedestrians and cars on 20 blocks, from Southeast 33rd Avenue and Stark Street to Southeast 13th Avenue. They did not confirm how many people or cars were hit, nor the type of vehicle the suspect was driving. The police bureau said there were several crime scenes in the area.

Several witnesses said they saw a jeep moving away from the scene.

Brandon Kutzler said he was walking around the Buckman neighborhood when he came across police arresting a man on 17th Avenue between Stark and Washington streets. Kutzler photographed a man in handcuffs on the ground.

Cody Warnes, an employee at a nearby business, said he saw a heavily pulled silver Honda Element drive east on Belmont Street. The car turned left in oncoming traffic on 30th Avenue toward Stark Street, then hit a cyclist on the corner.

On 19th Avenue, Sarah Mirk said she saw the grass torn by tire tracks as if a car had spun across the block. A man appears to be lying on the road, who was later taken away by police and paramedics.

David Jacobo said he was arriving in Laurelhurst Park around 1pm when he saw a Honda Element driving up the hill on SE 33rd Avenue. He turned right onto Pine Street, accelerating and hitting a woman who was crossing the street. He said the registration number flew out of the car, allowing him to report the incident. Emergency responders arrived quickly to transport the woman to the hospital.
