The correction came from the heels of news that AT&T is selling its entertainment assets in a $ 43 billion deal that will merge WarnerMedia and Discovery. It is speculated that the new management of WarnerMedia under the leadership of Discovery CEO David Zaslav will be more favorable to talent, which may have led to confidence in the idea that Dune will return to an exclusive theatrical performance.
Dune is just one movie included in Warner Bros. ‘s current plan. for the simultaneous release of his 2021 film of HBO Max theatrical films for a one-month exclusive window. The approach began with the release of Wonder Woman in December 1984 and continued with releases such as Judas and the Black Messiah, Godzilla v. Kong and Mortal Kombat. While the theatrical editions of Warner Bros. will have an exclusive 45-day window at US Regal theaters starting in 2022, Dune will not be included as part of this deal.
After it was announced, the unprecedented hybrid for theatrical broadcasting provoked anger in the entertainment industry, including Villeneuve. The Dune director spoke out against the model in December last year, saying that “AT&T hijacked one of the most respected and important studios in the film’s history” and the decision was “all about the survival of a telecommunications mammoth.” Although AT&T is now largely out of the equation, plans for HBO Max’s simultaneous debut appear to be sound.
