Dutch police arrest a Turkish man suspected of killing three in tram-firing

UTRECHT, Netherlands (Reuters) – Dutch police arrest a Turkish man suspected of killing three people and wounding five in a tram in the Dutch city of Utrecht

The Utrecht police announced the suspect, 37, old Gokmen Tanis was detained.

The city was placed under guard after the shooting, shortly after the morning peak hours that the authorities initially claimed as an outrageous terrorist attack. Police have raided several locations.

But hours after shooting, the shooter's motive remains obscure. A prosecutor said it could be "family reasons," and the Anadolu state news agency in Turkey, quoting a shooter's relatives, said he had fired a tram and then fired at others who tried to help her.

The authorities raised the threat of terrorism in the province of Utrecht to their highest level, the schools were invited to close their doors, and the paramilitary police increased the security of the airports, the other living infrastructure and the mosques. 19659007] RELATED: The level of terror lifted after shooting with a Dutch tram

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte calls crisis talks immediately after an incident that came three days after a lone shooter killed 50 people in mass shooting at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.

"Today our country is shocked by an attack in Utrecht … A terrorist motif can not

" The first reports have led to unbelief and disgust. Innocent people have been struck by violence … We are now doing our best to find the perpetrator or perpetrators as soon as possible. Utrecht Mayor Jan van Zann said three people were killed and nine were injured, three of them seriously affected. Later the number of wounded was reduced to five

The Dutch police issued the image of Tanis and warned the public not to approach him

The suspect had predecessors with the police, the prosecutor. The local operator, RTV Utrecht, said earlier that the suspect was known to the police for both minor and major crimes, including shooting in 2013

The shooting took place in the Canalenland, a quiet residential neighborhood on the outskirts of Utrecht with large immigrant population. "It is scary that something like this can happen so close to home," says Omar Rahou, who says his parents live on a street surrounded by police. "These things usually happen far, but that's very close, terrible."

Witness Dahn Molenaar, who said he was sitting in front of the tram when firing started, told national operator NOS he did not believe

"The first thing I thought was that this was some kind of revenge or something, or someone who is really crazy and has taken a gun, "he said.

The streets of Utrecht were more empty than usual and mosques in the city closed their doors on Monday.

Dutch television showed anti-terrorist units around the house in Utrecht and the dogs released.

Utrecht, the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands with a population of about 340,000, is famous for its picturesque canals and a large student population. Weapon killings are rare in Utrecht, as elsewhere in the Netherlands.
