The Marlins have received another positive Covid-19 test among their players, bringing the total to an alarming 18 cases, according to Daniel Alvarez Montes of El ExtraBase (via Twitter). Marlin also has two positive cases with his coaching staff, leading to 20 members of the team’s traveling party.
In better news for Marlin, a veteran outfielder Matt Joyce, who missed all of Summer Camp, tested negative and was allowed to join the team, according to Craig Mish of SportsGrid (a link on Twitter). To be clear, Joyce was not counted among the 18 positive Marlins cases that occurred after the discovery.
The entire alternative training site in Miami was reportedly tested negative recently, and they added several new players through waivers and a free agency as they appear to offset the huge fee that the Covid-1
Certainly the risk of further spread of Covid-19 infections throughout the league is a major concern, but there is also the question of the Marlins being able to send a list of major leagues when they seek to return to the field. The team has additional players in reserve on its alternative training site, but of the group that opened the season there, only four had experience in the Main League (Ryan Lavaroway,, Travis Snyder,, Jordan Yamamoto and Josh A. Smith).
The Marlins have been claiming ever since Mike Maureen,, Justin Schaefer and Josh D. Smith outside refusals in addition to signing Logan Forsythe and Pat WenditTheir additions are crucial, as Marlins decided to take a very young group to alternate camp for development. A dozen players there are 22 years old or younger – many not very close to MLB ready. Joyce is expected to need some time to invade their alternate site, but he will give Pisces the much-needed option in the relatively near future.
