Electric pole arson causes major internet outages for Cox customers in northern Phoenix | Arizona News



PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – A burning electric pole caused Cox’s Internet customers in northern Phoenix to lose the Internet service from Wednesday afternoon until Thursday.

According to Andrea Papas, a Cox spokesman, an APS power pole near Third Street and Bell Road caught fire Wednesday afternoon, damaging several thousand fiber connections that power Cox’s Internet services.

Arizona family viewer John Harkins filmed the moment this electric pole caught fire on Wednesday afternoon near 3rd Street and Bell Road. The fire caused an internet outage in much of northern Phoenix. The police call this arson.




Papas said the Cox team worked all night to restore the service, but there was no expected time for the service to be fully restored. It is not clear exactly how many customers are affected, but people from northern Phoenix all the way to Anthem are reporting outages.

Sgt. Ann Justus of the Phoenix Police Department said initial information indicated the fire was intentional. Anyone with information about this arson is asked to call the Phoenix police on 602-262-6141 or to remain anonymous, to call Silent Witness on 480-WITNESS, or for Spanish speakers to call call 480-TESTIGO.
