Emmy: HBO stuns the Netflix record holder to lead all the winners

The stream converted only 21 of its historic 160 nominations, finishing second to the premium cable network.

Netflix entered the 72nd Emmy Awards on Sunday with a record 160 nominations, but failed to limit its historic season as the permanent HBO was the biggest winner of the year after converting 30 of its 107 nominations based on Guards and Inheritance.

Despite its impressive nominations, Netflix has completed five nights of HBO-linked creative arts Emmy. Rivals entered the primary ceremony on Sunday with 19 in number. With the remaining 23 prizes to be handed out during Sunday’s virtual ceremony, Netflix and HBO competed in 16 of the categories. (Netflix entered the night with nominations in 19 categories against HBO 1

The streamer and rival of HBO finished in a draw after the Emmy in 2018, when they took 23 statuettes each. HBO recovered last year, taking 34 Emmys against Netflix 27.

The big night ended a year in which Netflix, led by outgoing originals boss Cindy Holland, set an Emmy record of 160 nominations compared to 118 last year. This easily topped the 107 HBO nominations (compared to 137 a year ago). Still, it was HBO – under the supervision of program president Casey Blues – that entered the night with the most nominated program of the year, Damon Lindelof. Guards. The drama took home victories for limited series and stars Regina King and Yahya Abdul-Matin II and ended the Emmy season as the most decorated program of the year.

HBO also distanced itself from Netflix with Sunday wins for dramatic actress (Euphorias Zendaya) and favorite Last week tonight with John Oliver. Dramatic series Inheritance also took home victories for lead actor Jeremy Strong, writing about creator / showrunner Jesse Armstrong.

Netflix took home just two wins on Sunday to direct a limited series (Unorthodox) and lead supporting actress in a drama (Julia Garner, Ozark).
