UK and EU leaders appear to have solidified their position on the resumption of Brexit negotiations, casting more doubt on any breakthrough before the 31 October deadline.
European Council President Donald Tusk rejected British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's latest requests for so-called "Irish backstop" provisions in this withdrawal agreement.
The rear stop will prevent border checks between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Tusk says Johnson has not presented any viable alternative, so there is nothing to negotiate.
