Exercise for so many minutes for a longer life, science says

For many of us, it has been a difficult year to maintain healthy habits. As our life situations change and our opportunities for exercise outside the home diminish with the recent jump across the country in cases, it can be difficult to understand what our usual workout routine looks like. The good news: it turns out that putting the benefits of regular exercise into your life may be easier than you thought. A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association Circulation has found that exercise bursts of at least twelve minutes can increase your life expectancy and reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes.

The study, conducted by researchers at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts Hospital, looked at the levels of hundreds of different metabolites in 41

1 middle-aged men and women before and after about twelve minutes of intense exercise. They found that the amount of DMGV, a biomarker associated with an increased risk of diabetes and fatty liver disease, fell by 18%. Similarly, glutamate, which has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and shorter life expectancy, is down 29%. This is great news for anyone who has a full schedule –just 12 minutes of vigorous exercise can fight deadly diseases and make you live longer. “We are beginning to better understand the molecular basis of how exercise affects the body and use this knowledge to understand the metabolic architecture around exercise response patterns,” explains co-author Ravi Shah, Ph.D. Harvard newspaper. “This approach has the potential to guide people who have high blood pressure or many other metabolic risk factors in response to exercise, and to move them toward a healthier trajectory early in life.”
