To fill his vacant position in the CMO, Facebook just promoted to C-suite a longtime Facebook CEO focused on product growth.
Alex Schultz, former vice president of product growth and analysis who has been with the company since 2007, announced the move on Tuesday in a Facebook post. Schultz will take the position left open by Antonio Lucio, who joined HP in 2018 and announced his departure last month. Lucio said he was leaving the company to devote 100% of his time to diversity, inclusion and justice.

Entering the role at the end of the US election, which is an extremely important time for the company, Schultz acknowledged Facebook’s precarious position in the eyes of the public. Referring to Facebook’s failures to establish the platform, Schultz mentioned that he had spent “most of my energy” over the past four years working for security at the company. This work includes projects such as the report on the implementation of Facebook’s community standards, a new quarterly report on the company’s efforts to free its platform from hate speech, harassment and other violations of the rules.
“I deeply believe in the good products of Facebook,” Schultz said in his Facebook post. “We’ve all seen it during this pandemic, as billions of people have connected with family and friends socially online while physically separated and slowing the spread of the virus. At the same time, I believe that control over any new technology is appropriate and there are ways we can and should improve without losing all good. “
