HIGHLANDS RANCH, CO (KMGH) – A disease that can be fatal to your dog and spread to humans is increasing in Colorado, according to a veterinarian.
Letty Paoli's dog, honey, has been battling health problems for several years. In the last year and a half, Meder has returned to being the energetic dog he remembered until two weeks ago. Her husband was in the backyard, playing with Meder, when he noticed that Dill was walking with a firm gait. He thinks Honey injured his back.
After being taken to a veterinarian, they discovered that Med was suffering from one of the early signs of leptospirosis.
"One of the first symptoms of leptospirosis is that they" drink a ton of water again and then go out and urinate and sometimes have urinary incidents because they drink so much water, "said Dr. Laura Russell, chief medical officer
Russell helped to care for copper, and she says that one to two cases of leptospirosis a year are usually seen in her office. six.
She says jaundice means that the disease has progressed.
"B eating the eyes will get a yellowish tinge, "she said.
Leptospirosis can be transmitted from animal to human or, as in the case of Honey, to another animal. Within days of their diagnosis, Paolis was forced to take the difficult
"Honey was such a sweet boy and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time," Paoli says.
The CDC says leptospirosis is spread through the urine of infected animals. It usually falls into water or soil where other animals may come in contact and become infected.
Paolis never received the vaccine for his dog. Dr Russell said the Highlands Ranch couple is not alone ̵
"I think this causes more dogs to become a little sicker than other vaccinations," Dr. Russell said. "I've seen some pretty horrific cases of leptospirosis this year. I'm vaccinating my dogs this year for that."
Signs of leptospirosis for humans are similar to the flu or stomach bug. Antibiotics can clear it for humans. The same applies to dogs if they are caught on time. Cats are not at risk.
The number of cases of leptospirosis in Colorado is unknown because the state does not report it.
