This is a cliche, but Far Cry: New Dawn is the equivalent of a popcorn video game. The pieces of it are delicious, but most of them are just to be consumed without expectation. Put it in your mouth and of course it can be hard to stop while the bag is not empty, but you will hardly remember to eat it after sitting down and having a real dinner.

For extended periods of open play, New Dawn is fun. Sometimes he borders on really fun, but never reveals himself in the highest values ​​he likes to annoy. It increases certain missions with stories as non-stop training, but in practice they just consist of the same things you did for hours on the map of the game. Shoot people, blow things up and enjoy the horribly satisfying animations of killing knives.

After the events at Far Cry 5, New Dawn takes place in the same fictional North American County of Hope County. Earth still feels enormous and natural, but after the nuclear war, the cuttings have changed. It is no longer just a blue sky, dark green trees and dusty roads. Bright pink flora blooms everywhere, the sky is strewn with shades of northern luminosity, and even the animals look like a spray painted by the 90 rangers. the post-apocalyptic character of the map lends itself to a better study. In the previous game, you rarely got out of your car and walk around on foot ̵

If you really want to remove New Dawn to its most basic shape, this is another game where you have to increase the numbers to watch the increase in the number. Your base of work, a cozy little settlement called Prosperity, needs to be aligned and its main components upgraded. The camp consists of several establishments, each of which serves as a predictive function. Modernizing the garage allows you to build and call for more reliable vehicles, while improving the work table allows you to build better weapons.

And the boy will need better weapons. Enemies in a new dawn, whether they are colorful animals or thugs from the tyrannical faction of Highwayman, are rapidly scaling in terms of difficulty. The release presents a number of basic mechanics for role-playing, but the most noticeable is the new "rank" system. Almost everything rotates around four colored rows: total (gray), rare (blue), legendary (purple) and elite (yellow). The enemies have them, the weapons have them, and the difficulty of the mission is indicated by them.

This means that in order to effectively send a legendary or elite enemy – that is, to kill them without having to resort to cheap tactics – you will need legendary or elite weapons. Damage resulting from something less will not cut it to the point where cartridges are likely to run before your enemy hits the floor.

So much of your time spent with New Dawn will turn into pursuit of the next rank of the weapon – that's the way the game measures progress. Once you hit this elite layer, you know you're almost untouchable, and first of all rewarding. Troubled, armored enemies can be suddenly killed with a few quick bursts from your elite rifle. A few shots in the head and this deadly puma is not nearly as deadly as it was two hours ago.

This is an easy, accessible, simplified progression, but once you are on top and the pursuit of the promised power is over, New Dawn presents a hollow experience. You are moving straight from the delivery trucks that you would have been kidnapping just a few hours ago. You no longer need the materials. You do not need many things anymore. Until now, you are likely to drown in unused resources, making the inclusion of micro-transactions in the eyes even more dubious. If you are remitting real money to speed up the simple upgrade process of your arsenal then there is no point in playing.

Let's say the New Dawn should be a longer and deeper experience. The RPG elements provide a well-received structure that Far Cry 5 was missing because it awkwardly guided you from one forced scenario to the next, and at the end of that sequel it seemed you had reached a full circle in a sensible way. Again, it's popcorn entertainment – you've done the bag and you're not too hungry anymore, but the movie is over and feels like time to go and do something else.

There is a reason we did not mention the story of New Dawn, and that's because it's largely unnoticeable. It is a freely designed fairy tale of revenge and a tower of religious subtext, and as Far Cry 5, her attempts to tell a serious, mature story are offset by an experienced dialogue and heroes that often make meaningless decisions that lead to meaningless results. Almost every narrative in New Dawn feels as if it contradicts the way the game is played.

He desperately wants to be a man to make you care for the Hope County residents, but apart from a handful of comical moments, a flat completely falls out. It's hard to take things seriously when you saw how far you could run a wild boar by tapping it on the remote explosive. Hell, forgetting the blast pigs, it's hard to take anything seriously after seeing the final battle of the boss of New Dawn.


It's about inviting your favorite games from 2019, do not expect to remember this post-apocalyptic adventure. Its simplified RPG elements add a welcome structure, but this transition across County Hope may seem guilty of guilt. It's almost shameful that Ubisoft is not all-in for making New Dawn a completely overwhelming spin-off rather than a sequel that struggles to tell a very serious story.
