Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country̵
“I have three children I would like to see during Thanksgiving,” Fauci told Yahoo News in a live interview Thursday. “They are in three separate parts, triangulated throughout the country. They are older women; I would love to see them. They themselves are worried about getting on a plane, being at an airport, getting in for a few days with their father, me, who is in an age group that is vulnerable. And they have decided not to do that. “
The 79-year-old director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a key figure in the White House coronavirus working group, said Americans should make informed decisions about family reunions during the holidays.
“People have to make their individual choices, especially who you have in your home,” Fauci said. “Are there vulnerable people?” Are they adults? Are these people with underlying conditions? You go to an airport that may be crowded. You’re on a plane. And then to enter, unless you know absolutely that you are not infected, there are many people who will not want to take that risk. “
On Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued updated guidelines on the risk of spreading the virus during the holiday season.
“Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others,” the agency’s website said. “If you have to travel, be aware of the risks involved.”
“I mean, it’s such a beautiful tradition, Thanksgiving, to bring families together,” Fauci added. “I think we just have to realize that things can be different this year, especially if you want to have people coming in from a place where there’s a lot of infection.”
According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 216,000 Americans have died from complications associated with COVID-19, and nearly 8 million have been infected.
