Fifth Victim Family: EEE "Destroy His Brain"

EDWARDSBURG, Mich. (WOOD) – The mosquito-infested Eastern Horse Encephalitis has already killed half of the people reported to have been killed this year in Western Michigan.

Public health officials confirmed on Monday that the fifth victim of a man from Cas County died of illness over the weekend. So far, 10 people, all from southwest Michigan, became ill with EEE in 2019.

Family members confirmed that 72-year-old Henry Hes died early Saturday morning at a hospital in the Chicago area where he was receiving treatment.

"He was very physically active, very physically fit and just strong, so strong," Carrie Hess' daughter, Hess, told News 8 on Monday night. And then he bit into a mosquito. And it took the strong man we knew and loved and just destroyed his brain. "

Henry Hes became ill at the end of September and went to the emergency room at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawak, Indiana, his family reported.

"We asked if it was EEE because we knew it was something in southwest Michigan," said Carrie Hes.

Doctors made a CT scan to check for inflammation of the brain, but none. Henry Hes refused to allow his spinal fluid test for further diagnosis because spinal tap positioning made it difficult for him to breathe, his family told News 8.

He received medication but was sent home, according to his daughters him, with doctors telling the family that they did not suspect that Hess had an EEE.

A few days later things got worse. Henry Hes contacted family members and wanted to go to the emergency room again. A relative called for an ambulance. Hess didn't react when the paramedics arrived at his home.

The ambulance took him back to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, where his care team later decided he needed to be sent to another place for more advanced treatment. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in the Chicago area, but never came out of his coma.

Following their father's wish not to maintain an artificial life, Hess's daughters decided last week to take him out of the machines. Shortly before 2am on Saturday, he died.

"I think you would appreciate us releasing it, even though it was very difficult," Carrie Hess said in tears.

Henry Hes was an Army veteran and retired. a construction worker who remained active until old. He was holding heavy equipment in his hand, including a bulldozer and excavator, and was using it to dig his own pond behind his home, his daughters said. The Hes family wonders if this pond may have attracted mosquitoes and increase the risk of EEE infection.

But his relatives do not think he would change anything.

"There's no way he wants to give up this pond or this life. … I think he would have taken the opportunity to live here," said Carey Hes. "She hated the bug spray. So even if we said, "Daddy, put on some big spray," he wouldn't listen to us. "

Carrie Hes said her father had a sense of humor and loved his family.

"I think he would just say that we live our lives and enjoy what he left for us, what he created for us," said Carey Hesse, as he stood near the pond on the scattered property of the father.

While their father could not be saved, Hess's family hopes his story can help other people point out how serious EEE is.

"I was scared when I started seeing EEE news in this area," said Carrie Hes. "But I never thought in a million years it would be here."
