Doctors in Florida say a new stem cell therapy is very effective in treating the coronavirus.
Friday’s reports detail treatment using stem cells collected from a newborn’s umbilical cord. Patients treated with the cells were reported to have a 91% survival rate with a faster recovery time.
According to experts, the cells share properties with treatments used to fight autoimmune diseases.
Doctors called the treatment a “potential turning point.”
“These cells, injected intravenously, are naturally administered with a very simple procedure that does not require an invasive procedure,” said Dr. Camilo Ricordi of the University of Miami School of Medicine. “You can just direct the transfusion to the lungs. The cells go into the lungs and this is just an amazing result and we are very excited to move on to the next step. “
Doctors say that using cells from just one umbilical cord can create therapeutic doses for more than 10,000 patients.
