Ford is slowing down the production of the Escape supplement after SUV fires in Europe

“We are moving production to next year as we work with suppliers to resolve the issue,” said Ford spokesman Dan Barbosa.

The Kuga, a hybrid model, is being withdrawn in Europe, as damage could cause hot gas to escape from the batteries, increasing the risk of overheating and fire.

Escape shares with Kuga components, including battery cells, Barbosa said. The Kuga is Ford’s most popular SUV in Europe, selling 153,800 in 2018.

Ford CEO Jim Hackett will step down and be replaced by Chief Operating Officer Jim Farley

The withdrawn Kuga models were produced between July 2019 and July 2020, according to the EU Safety Notice. Jay Ward, a Ford spokesman, said 20,500 cars had been withdrawn. There are seven cases of fire related to the problem, but no injuries or deaths, he added.

Ford (F) makes Escape at a factory in Louisville, Kentucky. The latest model of the small SUV will be sold in two hybrid versions, one of which is a plug-in.
