Early in Burke’s career, he recalled being “poor in dirt” and living in a studio in New York. “I slept on an air mattress, which I usually had to go back to Kmart once a week because there would be a hole in it,” he says.

Burke grew up in Missouri but left home and dropped out of school at 15. He worked in various jobs in Colorado before moving to New York in 2003, where he had another retail concert at Restoration Hardware. and was introduced in interior design.

The first big purchase Burke made with the tax refund was a suitable mattress. “I remember just lying on that mattress [with] two of my friends who had also moved to New York with me from Denver, and we were like, “Oh God, we’re rich. That’s life.'”

“This bed was the most luxurious thing in the world for me, although it wasn’t a super expensive bed,” says Burke. Depending on the materials, size and characteristics, the mattress can cost from 250 to 4000 dollars.

Burke says that “for everything related to the bed,” it’s worth spending a little more, like good sheets.

“You have to go to bed every night, and when your feet touch those sheets, it has to be like waking up like you’re in a nice hotel,” Burke said. “It’s the mood and the feeling you have to have when you fall asleep [and] when you wake up, because that’s how you end your day and start your day. “
