Google confirms that ad blockers affect Docs – and they must fix it themselves



If you’ve had problems with strange text formatting, or just haven’t been able to edit Google Docs or Presentations in the last day or two, this is the point. Although we did not initially know the exact reason or why this is happening at the moment, Google Drive product manager Remy Burger points to recent changes that some unblockers have implemented ̵

Burger points out that the problem stems from changes to the AdBlock and EasyList lists, which are used by most, if not all, adblockers. That’s why Google can’t or won’t do anything to solve the problem – it was introduced by adblockers and needs to be fixed by them. Fortunately, AdBlock has already issued a statement saying it will resolve the issue soon, so you may not have to wait too long for a solution.

For the last day, we’ve seen a few reports on the issue that affect both Google Docs and Slides, as well as the emergence of sites like Reddit and Twitter. We’re not sure if this affects other Google Workspace services.

At least one of us AP staff has also encountered it and it can manifest in several different ways. In the “lightest” cases, the text simply begins to wrap under the other elements of the page in a way that obscures it. In more extreme cases, the text may overlap in a zalgo style,

It may vary, but in some cases I am told that the problem even prevents the editing of documents altogether. It also doesn’t happen to everyone – some people on the Chromebook are having the problem, others on the Windows are having problems, and we’re not sure if the sudden change is related to a specific version or edition of Chrome.

However, there is a known reason for the solution: Extensions as ad blockers have been shown to trigger the problem for some, and “pausing” or releasing the page from blocking ads or disabling the extension directly solves the problem in many cases.

In some cases, those affected may I think that adblock is disabled for a domain, but check again for that particular page if you still have a problem. If you navigate there from docs.new, for example, it may not match the rules you have in place. And if you’ve only added drive.google.com to your allowed list, you may need to add docs.google.com as well.

There are several other solutions to support the site for help to document editors. Extensions other than blocking ads that change the content of the page can also cause the problem, so you can try disabling all of your extensions if other solutions don’t work. Finally, you can try a different browser – most of those who encounter problems indicate that it is only for Chrome.

Finally, I feel the need to note: If you use adblocker, consider disabling it for sites like ours. This is how most of the internet and the places you enjoy reading or watching content make a living and without them we could not exist (although we try very hard not to overdo it with ours).
