The best part about refreshing Chromecast is the Google TV interface that comes with it, but as with any Google product, this user interface is subject to change over time. In early February, Google TV released a revised home screen with much smaller application icons, but in early April, things returned to normal.
The article was updated on April 3 after moving back to larger application icons.
In early February, some users saw a silent update on the Google TV home screen, which adjusts the size of application icons, where they are now significantly smaller in size. The Google TV home screen lists the apps in the main “About you”
The difference wasn’t easy to spot at a glance (which is probably intentional on Google’s part), but it’s clear when you look closely. The row of applications really reduces the size of the icons, making room for more icons, while reducing the overall size of the row. From startup, this tab can display seven full application icons, as seen in the image above, but with this change, it can display nine, as shown below.
Functionally, this doesn’t change anything, but it takes a little emphasis on apps and redirects it to content recommendations where Google TV is so good.
At first, the change was not widespread, only for a few Reddit users. Within a few days, the change was introduced for all Google TV users, who at the time only included the new Chromecast.
To April 3, it looks like Google TV returns the app icons on the home screen back to normal-sized icons. We noticed the change on one of our own Chromecasts, and site friend Joe Maring also noted the change on Twitter.
