It can’t be long now. Just a few weeks ago, we reported a few sightings of Google’s new smart TV dongle (Chromecast, Android TV, Nest?) At several retailers and the price was a bit shocking to me. For some of the technology that seems ready to deliver the Chromecast experience, along with a new, updated Android TV interface and a new remote control, I was expecting a price tag of nearly $ 99. After all, this thing seems set to offer much more functionality than any Chromecast currently offered by Google.
In this earlier report, the price was $ 49 or $ 59 depending on the retailer and I wouldn̵
So, from one move of Target, we not only get a solid sense of price, but also of name. Fortunately, the price of $ 49 seems to be the one that will hold up, and if internal retail systems are something to be used, this device will be called a “Chromecast with Google TV”, as previously speaks from 9to5 Google. I assumed we were full circle, right? Does anyone else remember Google’s early failed attempts at smart TVs? Yes, and it was called Google TV.
The difference? This time, smart TVs are commonplace, and Google has had years of support for Chromecast and Android TV. As we know that Chromecast with Google TV will basically inherit all the capabilities of Chromecast (casting, backgrounds, time, assistant, Stadia), while adding in a new, updated Android TV (now called Google TV), this new device sees a much more mature Google that gives Google TV a foothold again. We don’t have a date, but there are rumors revolving around a hardware event or announcement later this month or early next month. It’s time to launch this new Chromecast, and I know I’m already keeping an eye on a few of them for both home and office.
