Google’s “Pixel 5a” makes its first appearance on AOSP

Only yesterday, Google began to irritate the middle range Pixel 4a, along with the date of August 3. Today, however, we have the first look at the mid-range pixel phone for 2021 – “Pixel 5a” in the open source project on Android.

Earlier this month, we are pretty confident that we know the three Google Pixel phones for 2020 – namely Pixel 4a from the middle class, Pixel 4a from the middle class and 5G and premium Pixel 5. Our Stephen Hall has already explained what to do expect from these three phones with lots of detail.

With these more or less solved mysteries, our attention has already turned to Google’s phones from 2021. With the success of Pixel 3a and the great excitement around the much delayed Pixel 4a, it would not be a surprise to see Google offer phones from the middle class in the foreseeable future.

Today, however, we have concrete evidence that Google is indeed working on a mid-range phone in 2021

called the Pixel 5a. This comes from a code change in the Android Open Source Project, where a developer makes direct references to essentially the entire phone line. Google Pixel and which version of Android that launches or will launch with.

As we notice from our Dylan Russell, in the list of devices we see the three upcoming Pixel phones we already knew about – Pixel 4a, 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 – as well as a direct mention of Pixel „5a. “

So what do we all learn from this initial mention? First, we now know that the Google Pixel 5a is in development. Second, we can assume that just like the Pixel 3a and 4a, the Pixel 5a will release in the middle of the year as it will be on Android 11 (R) instead of Android 12 next fall.

What we don’t know is what hardware this Pixel 5a would work with. This type of information does not usually appear in an Android open source project until a device is launched. In any case, it is exciting to have confirmation that Google will continue to launch quality mid-range phones in the foreseeable future.
