FEDS INVESTIGATING WHO WAS MAKING TRUMP ON THE BACK OF MANATEE IN FLORIDA

Last weekend, shocking images of a disfigured manatee floating in Homosasa Springs, Florida, went viral, sparking a federal investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which called on the public for information about the incident.

“TRUMP” was scraped in a layer of algae on the back of the manatee and the slow-moving animal did not appear to be seriously injured, authorities said.

The Florida-based non-profit wildlife organization Save the Manatee Club says manatees are protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

“The Save the Manatee Club was immediately informed of the situation and is appalled by this disrespectful, harmful act against an endangered species,” the group said in a statement Tuesday.

The organization said anyone who did the scraping could have caused the manatee pain.

“Based on the available photos and videos, it appears that the perpetrator may have scratched the skin of the manatee with his fingers by scraping the algae that grow on the slow-moving mammals,” the Save the Monastery club explained. “It is possible that they also scraped the top layer of manatee skin. Manatees have tough but sensitive skin covered with tiny sensory hairs, so this action may have caused discomfort or pain to the manatee.”
