California Democrat Brad Sherman condemned the Hamas rocket attacks, saying Monday that each of the 4,500 shots fired against Israel was a “war crime.”
“Hamas has fired 4,500 rockets into Israel for the sole purpose of killing as many civilians as possible. Each of these rockets is a war crime,” Sherman told Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
Blinken appeared before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Foreign Affairs to discuss his department’s budget for 2022, just weeks after the Israeli-Palestinian conflict flared up again. During the hearing, Sherman stressed the importance of Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system and asked how the Biden administration would work to replenish it after intercepting thousands of missiles.
Sherman told Blinken that the Israeli missile defense system “has saved countless Israeli civilian lives, as well as countless Palestinian lives, helping to bring the battle to an end more quickly.”

He added that “unfortunately we will not bring criminals to justice, but we can prevent these crimes in the future by filling in [the] Iron dome. ”
Blinken told Sherman that the Biden administration was “committed” to “filling the Iron Dome.”

Sherman’s comments came as many Democrats, including Commissioner Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, criticized Israeli attacks on Hamas in Gaza. In May, she said: “It would be appalling for the Biden administration to move $ 735 million in precision-guided weapons to Netanyahu without a hitch after the escalation of violence and attacks on civilians.”
In a tweet this month, she claimed that “Israeli airstrikes killing civilians in Gaza are an act of terrorism. Palestinians deserve protection. Unlike Israel, missile defense programs such as the Iron Dome do not exist to protect Palestinian civilians.”
