Prince Charles and Princess Diana tied the knot in 1981 during a lavish ceremony that looked like something out of a storybook, but their marriage was not a fairy tale. It was an unfortunate alliance for the Princess of Wales, littered with deeds and lies.
After the couple separated, Diana decided to tell her story to the world in a bomb interview that sent shockwaves through the monarchy and nearly toppled Britain’s royal family. This is how Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret and even Prince William reacted to BBC1’s Princess Diana Panorama interview.
Princess Margaret was furious and banned all pictures of Diana from her home
The queen’s sister, Princess Margaret, had a good relationship with Diana at one time. But that changed with Panorama interview, as Margaret described it as “betrayal” and called it “unforgivable.”
The two women were neighbors at Kensington Palace, and Margaret took Diana under her wing when she first joined the royal family. The countess guided her nephew’s wife during royal engagements and let her know who to talk to and who to shake hands with. But when Diana decided to do the interview, in which she told about her marriage problems and the infidelity of Prince Charles, the Countess of Snowden was inflamed.
“Her neighbor next door, Princess Margaret, who was quite supportive during the break-up, she banned all photos of Diana in magazines, will have nothing to do with her,” revealed Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton.
Craig Brown, who wrote the book Mrs. Mila Ninety-nine glances at Princess Margaret, agreed that after the broadcast of the interview the Countess did not want any images of the People’s Princess near her.
“She wouldn’t even have magazines with Diana’s face on the cover nearby.” She would betray them, “he said.

Prince William was also angry with his mother for doing the interview
But it wasn’t just Princess Margaret who was angry about this interview. Princess Diana’s own son, Prince William, had also seen him, and he was not at all pleased with his mother’s making it public.
In the Amazon Prime documentary William and Harry: Brothers in Arms,,
Royal Correspondent Katie Nickel claims that William is very angry with his mother after the broadcast of the interview. “William was exposed to everything from the interview and called his mother furious and furious,” Nicole said.
Nicole revealed that William watched the interview in a teacher’s office in Ethan, where he boarded, and did not believe what he heard his mother say.
“He just couldn’t believe that his mother had invited the TV cameras to the house where he grew up and loved to betray his father and their family in such a public way,” Nicole wrote.
On the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, William said he finally understood why his mother had chosen to do the interview.
“I can understand – sometimes in such situations, you feel incredibly desperate and it is very unfair to say things that are wrong,” explained the future king (per Express). “The easiest thing is to just say or go to the media yourself. Open this door. [But] once you open it, you can never close it again. “

Queen Elizabeth was furious and ordered Charles and Diana to divorce
The public muddy and negative headlines from Diana’s interview were the last straw for Queen Elizabeth. She was extremely upset that not only did the Princess of Wales broadcast Prince Charles’ dirty laundry, but she also reduced the entire royal family to a soap opera. So she decided that enough was enough.
Less than a month after the interview aired, the monarch sent a letter to Charles and Diana ordering their divorce. This happened and it was finalized in August 1996, a year before the princess’s untimely death.
