What happens when you drink wine every day? The side effects are not as bad as you might think. In fact, it can make a good body. Wine has some great health benefits. Italian researchers conducted a meta-analysis that reviewed 34 independent studies to determine the link between alcohol and mortality (how long you will live). The study, published in Archive of internal diseases, found that the relationship between alcohol consumption and mortality was a J-shaped relationship. Using participants who avoided alcohol as a baseline, increasing alcohol intake may actually reduce the risk of early death – but that was only the case for so long. Once they reached a certain number of drinks, the risk of death was higher.
Meta-analysis showed that those who drink approximately half a drink a day had the lowest mortality. But researchers note that there are a number of amounts you can drink where you can still take advantage of these life-prolonging benefits. Up to 4 drinks per day for men were protective and no more than 2 drinks per day for women were protective.
Another review published in the Journal of the American Heart Association Circulation, also seeks to answer the question “to drink or not to drink?” The researchers looked at a number of factors beyond life expectancy, namely cardiovascular health, inflammation, cholesterol levels and hypertension, to determine the effect of drinking wine on heart health.
After referring to nearly 140 studies, the article came to a conclusion. (Well, as close to a conclusion as possible – the researchers say more research still needs to be done to confirm their suspicions.) As for heart health, drinking 1 to 2 drinks for men and 1 drink a day for women is how much wine is not only safe to drink per day, but is also the amount that will bring health benefits.
As for brain health, and in particular the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, the same standards are true. French researchers found that subjects who drank less than 1 to 2 glasses of wine a day (classified as “light drinkers”) had a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease than those who did not drink at all.
