Last Wednesday, ASUS announced the ROG Phone 3, the Taiwanese company’s third smartphone under its ROG gaming subset. The specification sheet of the phone is as massive as the phone itself, with features such as Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+, up to 16 GB RAM, 6,000mAh battery, two USB-C ports and a display with a refresh rate of 144Hz. In the phone’s display settings, you can choose from the standard “automatic” refresh rate mode, which allows the system to decide what the display refresh rate should be, or you can choose to start the phone at 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz or 144Hz. . Interestingly, it seems that ASUS has tested the hidden mode of the 6th refresh rate: 160Hz.

After entering this command, restart your phone. Once your phone is backed up, you will be able to switch the 160Hz display mode to Settings> Display> Refresh Rate or from the Quick Update Settings tab.
If you’re skeptical that this actually works, you can test the refresh rate in one of several ways. First, you can go to testufo.com to see the frequency of UFO footage moving through space. Second, you can try the fluid simulation app and set the refresh rate to 160 in the app settings. (This is my personal favorite way to test, as you can really see the impact of a higher refresh rate as the fluid movement becomes much smoother.) Finally, you can try one of the many games that support playback at 144 frames per second on ROG Phone 3 – if the game supports playback at 144 frames per second on the device, there is a good chance that its frame rate is actually “unlocked” and can work at 160 frames per second. The Pac-Man app, for example, worked at 160 frames per second for me, and I’m sure many others will do the same.
Now I’m sure you’re wondering at this point if it’s safe. I don’t think ASUS would have experienced this higher refresh rate if it was dangerous for the panel. I’ve been running the ROG Phone 3 at 160Hz for a few days now and I haven’t had any stability issues. However, it is clear that ASUS left this display mode unfinished, as the display does not appear to be properly calibrated in this mode. You can adjust some of the display parameters in Settings> Display> Splendid until you find a configuration that looks appealing to you, but this refresh rate mode is hidden away for a reason – it’s not an end user. Since the phone and display are able to work with 2340 × 1080 at 160Hz, I hope ASUS will review this display mode and activate it in a future software update after its proper calibration. The ROG Phone 3 certainly has the muscle (Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+) and battery (6000mAh) to handle it, so why not?
