Nico Hulkenberg admired his first day at RP20 at Racing Point after his 11-hour call to drive for the team this weekend.
He finished the fastest on Friday after flying back from Germany yesterday to pick up Sergio Perez’s car.
“The last 24 hours have been a bit special,” Hulkenberg said. “Crazy and wild.
“At 16:30 yesterday afternoon I called, I took a plane here. There was seat in the seat until 2 a.m. last night. Then 8 a.m. this morning went into the simulator, a little preparatory work, so it was a short night. But it’s all worth it.
“It was a lot of effort from the team, I want to thank the team and the guys on the night shift who did an amazing job of getting me in the car and even quite comfortable, as well as the FIA for turning it so thick with splendor. It was very special. “

Hulkenberg has not driven an F1 since December last year and he admitted that he felt the tension in his body after his first day in the RP20.

He said the car felt “completely different” from Renault, which he drove last year. “I tried to do it step by step today, to speed up the car, to understand it,” he said.
“It just takes time to breathe in everything, to understand it, to know how to drive it and learn. Obviously there is more time tonight to focus on learning. All I can say is pretty fast these days. “
After finishing his first training day six-tenths of a second behind teammate and rhythm player Lance Stroll, Hulkenberg says there is more to come from him tomorrow.
“You see the huge potential,” he said. “The car is very fast.
“I didn’t use the top tire so well, I think I have a little more in the bag and I should use this tire better. But that’s what we’re going to work on, obviously, at night, and we’re trying to get the best out of the car this weekend. “
