Identified second case of semi-identical twins

(Newser)

There are identical twins, there are non-identical twins – and in incredibly rare cases there are twins that fall somewhere between the two. The second case, once registered by semi-identical or semi-senile twins, is described in a recent published study published in the New England Journal of Medicine . Twins born in Brisbane, Australia, in 2014, were the first of their kind identified during pregnancy. Professor Nicholas Fisk, who was responsible for maternal and twin care, explains how this happened, the BBC reported. "The ultrasound study of the mother at six weeks showed a single placenta and positioning of amniotic bags, indicating that she was expecting twins." However, a 1

4-week ultrasound showed that the twins were male and female, which is not possible for identical twins.
In case of identical twins, the fertilized egg divides into two; Brother twins are the result of fertilizing two eggs from two sperm. Sebaceous twins appear when the egg is fertilized by two spermatozoa before separation. That means there are three sets of chromosomes – two of the father and one of the mother – and the experts say it is very unusual for these embryos to survive, Science Daily reported. Twins have more genetic similarities than twins, but less than identical twins: "The genotyping of the amniotic fluid from each sac showed that the twins were identical in maternity but had a chimeric 78% of their father's genome," says in the study. The other known case was identified in the United States in 2007 (read more stories about twins.)
