Tesla CEO Elon Musk said something similar to the headline above at Tesla's Quarterly Conference a few hours ago.
That may have made me smile and laugh more than anything else during the conference. The reason is simple and that is why I keep this article short.
There are many ways to rationalize a solution and there are various reasons to buy one vehicle over another. You can prioritize power, safety, entertainment, autonomous driving, cargo space or technology. Plus, you might just like what the vehicle looks like. On several of these issues, a Tesla car objectively wins against competition in its class. But paper profits do not always cost much. What is important is the experience in the real world. One thing Tesla owners try to express in writing while talking to other people or just thinking why they love Tesla so much is how great it is to drive or use Tesla. These are not blank paper reasons – they are essentially experienced every day when you have a car.
However, no conversation or writing can convey this understanding to anyone. The vehicle must have experience. Most people have not driven Tesla and many do not even know what Tesla is. When we are road owners (as we tend to be), we constantly see "competing cars" on the road that have just come down from the dealership – and just shake our heads, largely regretting the people I bought them without we realize that they could get a far superior vehicle and wonder, in part, why they did it. It happens to me several times a day. I can't beat it (ask my wife). I talk to other Tesla owners and they have the same feeling and reaction. It's just hard to notice that other people make such unfortunate mistakes when buying new vehicles.
The way Elon talked about this during the conversation was funny because it was so real, so clearly what I and others think practically every day. And he expressed well how difficult it was to put those observations into words. You just can't convey the feeling of " man, you made such a huge mistake " to someone who doesn't understand it, to someone who didn't get behind the wheel of Tesla. Of course, for anyone who receives it, this statement is so obvious that it is simply refreshing (and perhaps funny) to hear someone else say it. We could see this game with Joe Rogan. When Elon was on his podcast, Joe had never driven Tesla. Elon encouraged him with the words that could have meant that Joe really needed to try driving a car. Joe responded in some way "sure, sure, I'll do it … but I really like cars." Clearly, he did not receive it and Ilon's comments did not do much to convince him. Nevertheless, the test drove Tesla … and he was blown by him. He bought the top Model S and obviously admires him in his show often. (I don't listen to the show, but he told me that.) Now, Joe certainly has the same feeling about Elon, other Tesla owners, and I have as I travel around town and see "competitors" that some unhappy souls bought from lack of awareness or lack of experience.
Another reason why the comment was amusing is that it is simply not what you expect to hear during a corporate conversation. Essentially, this is a widely accepted thing that I assume most Tesla owners think regularly, but it definitely does not come out of the yellow idol corporate manual .
During the conversation, the context was when someone asked about the evolution of Tesla Model S and Model X and how Elon thought about their progress (1:51 in our video). In the part of the answer that made me laugh and inspire this article, Elon referred specifically to Model S. He said: "The Model S literally won Motor Trend & # 39; The best car ever  in history. If you're there and you stand by it and don't buy the Model S, I think you just made a mistake. "Although they pointed out the Model S there, the question is about every Tesla. In general, the feeling is the same and is more about the other vehicle you see than what you are driving. I see a friend getting a new Mercedes-Benz SUV and I can't think of it, "If only she knew. … If only she had a week with the Model X before then – there was no way she could have bought a Mercedes. Only if she knew what was missing. "It's a huge mistake, but she doesn't even know. I see someone in the red light who bought a new BMW 3 Series or Ford Mustang:" Ugh, what a catastrophic mistake. They could drive so much better car and enjoy it and much more . "But we can't do anything, so we get the feeling Elon has and we have to get past it. We expect that non-Tesla owners will not receive it. We know Tesla owners will.
This is no noise to anyone reading this who bought a non-Tesla. It's just how it is. It's just a feeling most Tesla owners have on a regular basis. It is a feeling of unhappy wonder. The good news is that with every 100,000 new Teslas on the road, more people can see, experience and learn about cars. Word of mouth is something, especially with Teslas. But this is the story of the next day. It's 2:40, so I have to go to bed.
