iFixit drilled a keychain hole in one of Apple’s AirTags in its latest demolition

The iFixit team made their break again, this time examining Apple’s AirTag trackers. Part one of his two-part review goes into the guts of small trackers, and for those who complain about the lack of an AirTag keychain chain, iFixit (carefully) drills a hole in one without damaging any of its parts.

After some intelligence in our first AirTag, we grabbed a 1/16 ”drill and carefully drilled a hole through the second tracker in our package – after removing the battery, of course. Miraculously, we managed to avoid all the chips, boards and antennas, just by drilling through plastic and glue. The best part? AirTag survived the operation as a champion and worked as if nothing had happened.

The team warned that you must remove the battery before drilling, and warned that drilling in the wrong place could cause serious damage. So try this at home only if you have drill skills.

iFixit drilled a hole in the AirTag for a keychain and it survived

iFixit compares “its AirTags” to the Tile Mate and Samsung Galaxy SmartTag. The AirTags are the smallest in the group, with its 3-volt coin cell battery replaceable – type CR2032, the same as the one SmartTags uses – takes up most of the interior space. “All three trackers open with a finger – no other tools are needed,” according to iFixit, but they found the AirTag the hardest to remove.

An X-ray of the three markers shows that Apple has used its interior space effectively, nothing that “the relative darkness of the AirTag [in the X-ray image] due to the solid center speaker magnet and its steel battery cover. iFixit tweeted 360-x-ray image:
