EXCEPTIONAL: After a long and persistent search, Marvel found its Mrs. Marvel. The studio eavesdrops on newcomer Iman Velani to star in his Disney + series, based on the comic book character. Marvel and the streamer recently named Adil El Arbi and Bilal Falah, Sharmin Obaid-Chinoy and Mira Menon as directors of the project.
Marvel had no comment.
Mrs. Marvel comes from writer Bisha K. Ali and focuses on Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager based in New Jersey. Ms. Marvel first appeared in 2014 as the first Muslim character of Marvel, which participates in its own title and will become the first Muslim character of Marvel Studios. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Fage said that in addition to appearing on the small screen, Kamala Khan will be included in future Marvel movies.
The plan was always to stay true to the character in order to find the right actress to play the role, even if it meant proposing someone who was not well known to the public.
In recent weeks, Marvel and Disney + have been working hard, not only setting Tatiana Maslani to lead She-Hulk but also to give Nick Fury the character of Samuel L. Jackson̵
Although this marks Velani’s first major Hollywood production, it has already made attempts to help diversify the industry. At the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, she was part of the Next Wave Committee, which was tasked with adding a special label to films – already programmed in other categories – that they believed would resonate with their peers.
