Impeachment witness Alexander Windman calls Trump a “useful idiot”

“President Trump must be considered a useful idiot and a companion, making him an unwitting agent of Putin,” Windman told The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg.

“They may or may not have dirt on it, but they don’t have to use it,” he said when asked if the Kremlin had materials to blackmail Trump. “They have more efficient and less risky ways to hire him. He aspires to be a leader like Putin, and that’s why he admires him. He likes authoritarian strong people who act with impunity, without control and balance. So he will try to please Putin. “

Windman gained a national profile by testifying against the president in the Chamber’s impeachment investigation last year. He retired from the army in July, saying a retaliatory campaign by the president had halted his promotion to the rank of colonel. But White House communications director Alice Farah called the allegation that Windman was a victim of revenge “ridiculous and untrue,” even though Trump tweeted that he was “very disobedient.”

“The president ruined my military career,” Windman told Goldberg in an interview published Monday. “I’m not crying about the spilled milk. I have other things to do. “

The Atlantic interview marks Windman’s first public speech against Trump since the impeachment hearings.

“I was attracted to this by the president, who politicized me. “I think it’s important for the American people to know that this can happen to any honorary member of the service, to any government official,” he said. “I think it’s important for me to tell people that I think the president has made the country weaker.”

Goldberg was the first to announce earlier this month that President Trump had called U.S. troops buried in a French cemetery “losers.” Since then, the Washington Post, The Associated Press, the New York Times and Fox News have supported parts of the report. Trump has denied the allegations.
