Indiana Jones actress Karen Allen defends iconic character from allegations of pedophilia

Karen Allen, the actress who played Marion Ravenwood in “Attackers of the Lost Ark,” hopes to clear the air for a controversial scene between her character and Indiana Jones from Harrison Ford.

The popular adventure film debuted almost exactly 40 years ago in 1981, presenting a world of partnership and turmoil between Indy and Marion. As the films gained popularity and spawned three subsequent films, fans discussed the duo’s initial encounter and the implications that Jones had a romantic relationship with a minor girl.

When Jones first sees Marion at her bar, they discuss the fall he had with her father after embarking on a romantic relationship. Marion holds a grudge and yells at Jones, “I was a kid!”

“He knew what you were doing,” Jones replied.

The scene is unclear and the nature of their past novel is never explored in subsequent scenes. This has led many to speculate over the years that Jones was courting a girl who was inappropriately old for him, with some even going so far as to call him a pedophile.

In an interview with Uproxx to mark the film’s 40th anniversary, Allen explained that she always believed her character was justified in being angry with Jones, but did not say he had raised a literal child.

“I think I’m saying I was 16. I don’t know. I always imagined she was 16 and he was 26. And he was her father’s student. And that remained very mysterious,” she told the paper.

She went on to note that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas deliberately kept the moment unclear to give the duo’s story to the audience that first met them. As a result, she always believed that the relationship was perhaps less whirlwind than Ravenwood released.

“So we don’t even know what it is. I mean, they could kiss a few times, and she was just completely hunched over, and he might just not want to be engaged to such a young man,” she explained. “And maybe my father would be angry with him. I mean, the best part is that we don’t know what the circumstances are. So she obviously took deep care of him. Maybe he took care of him too. But in the end, he decided it was a dangerous situation and he didn’t want to be involved. “

She added: “I mean, I guess when something is as vague as that, you can color it any way you want to color it. I tend to color it, something like it was pretty innocent. When she she says, “It was wrong and you knew it.” I mean, I think maybe he led her in some way, but when she says she was a child, I think she meant she was 16 . Kind of. “

The star ended his thoughts, unequivocally noting that he did not consider him a pedophile.

Nevertheless, Jones and Ravenwood renewed their romance at the end of “Raiders,” but she did not return for “Temple of Doom” or “The Last Crusade.” However, Ravenwood surprised the audience in 2008 when he appeared in “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” to introduce Jones to their son. Ford is currently filming the fifth part of the franchise without the title.

It has not been confirmed that Allen will reprise her role, but she recently told Forbes that she would be ready to bring Ravenwood back to her own TV show.

“She never appeared, but I would adore him. I would like to do something like that to develop the character more deeply,” she told the publication. “Well, if Disney is there listening.”
