iFixit disassembled Apple's new iPhone models, revealing more about the differences with phones from last year. iFixit captured live video from the iPhone 11 Pro stream and wrote a guide to the iPhone 11 Pro Max.
The first major difference is that the batteries in the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are much larger than the batteries in the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.
On iPhone 11 Pro Max the device is .4 mm thicker and the screen is .25 mm thinner. As John Gruber expected, the release of 3D Touch from the iPhone line makes the screen a little thinner. 3D Touch requires an extra layer beneath the display to register pressure on the screen.
This may seem like a small difference, but it does free up some battery space. The iPhone 1
The result is that the iPhone 11 Pro Max already has a 3,969 mAh battery compared to the 3 179 mAh battery in the iPhone XS Max. It represents a nearly 25% annual improvement on the Max battery.
These hardware enhancements, combined with the more efficient A13 chip system, create significant improvements in battery life for the user. Apple claims that the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max last up to 4 hours and 5 hours respectively from the previous generation.
In other news, the camera module is much larger in this year's new device (as expected). Apple was able to install a third camera by reducing the size of the logic board.
The logic board has the same two-layer design that was first introduced with the iPhone X. It's like a club sandwich with chips. Although Apple and Qualcomm have settled their multi-billion dollar lawsuits, the modem in iPhones 11 Pro is still manufactured by Intel.
When it comes to things we don't yet know, iFixit couldn't understand. how much RAM is available – Steve Turton-Smith believes that may have 2GB of RAM designed for a camera you wouldn't notice by benchmarks.
Similarly, there are already two battery connectors instead of one, It is difficult to say for sure that the second connector has been added for two-way wireless charging – there may be many different reasons. Rumor has it that Apple wanted to add a wireless charging back, but retained the feature at the last minute.
Overall iFixit scores a repair 6 out of 10. iPhone XS models also have a 6 out of 10.
