LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – More than a dozen Orange County sheriff’s deputies gathered in the closed Walt Disney World theme park in April, trying to find an offender accused of camping on an island in the resort, reveals a video received by News 6.
Richard McGuire, 42, was arrested in April for claiming to be camping at the former Discovery Island Zoo while the entire resort was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As lawmakers searched the ground for air, water and water, trying to find McGuire, the suspected intruder recorded videos of him hiding on the island.
“Disney’s world is not playing. Disney World doesn’t play (explicitly), “McGuire said in a video recently posted on his YouTube channel showing him covered in leaves as the sheriff’s helicopter could be heard overhead.
McGuire pleaded not guilty to a Disney violation – a crime punishable by a maximum one-year sentence.
A recent video, filmed by MPs’ worn-out cameras, shows how the persecution unfolded on Discovery Island, an 11-acre island in the middle of Disney Bay that once housed animal exhibits, walking trails and refreshment stand.
The former park, which can only be reached by boat, was closed to the public in 1999, a year after the opening of Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park.
A wildlife camera, similar to the one used by hunters and biologists, took a picture of a man who violated Discovery Island just before 7:00 a.m. on the morning of April 30, Disney security officials said.
Videos posted on McGuire’s YouTube channel show that he was traveling to the island around 11pm the night before in a small boat that he was transporting to the Disney property on the roof of his van.
About an hour before the intruder was filmed by a Disney camera, McGuire could be seen in a YouTube video drying his boots in front of a campfire that appeared to be burning in an island building.
“If you ever do that, be respectful of the next people who are researchers,” McGuire said in a YouTube video. “If you have a fire, don’t forget to put it out the next day. I’ve been doing this since 2004 and I’ve never lit anything. “
At about 8 a.m., two lawmakers took a boat ride across Lake Bay and began searching the island.
The worn-out cameras of the deputies show that they are holding guns while looking for the violator in the crumbling buildings of the former park and on the paths entwined with vines.
“It must be somewhere here,” one deputy said when he realized more law enforcement would be needed to cover the island.
Hours later, three teams of MPs arrived on Discovery Island by boat and began patrolling the property as the sheriff’s helicopter flew overhead.
In one of the videos posted on McGuire’s YouTube channels, MPs’ voices can be heard in the background as he appears to be hiding from them.
“They’re talking to me,” McGuire said in the video. The island is surrounded.
For more than an hour, lawmakers passed through the rusty cages of the former zoo, crumbling toilets and collapsed sidewalks, sometimes using machetes to cut through a thick brush.
“This is the best hide-and-seek game ever,” joked one deputy.
“Dude, that’s schematic,” his partner replied.
Unable to find the offender, lawmakers ended the search, but Disney staff continued to watch over the island from the shore.
“We probably went right past him,” a deputy said before leaving the island.
Around 8 p.m., deputies were called back to the Walt Disney world when a man who later identified himself as McGuire was spotted crossing Lake Bay in a speedboat.
“I just got tired. Flat is worn out, ”McGuire said shortly after approaching a deputy on shore and pulling the boat out of the water.
“Did you go camping?” The deputy asked.
“Yes,” McGuire said. “It’s a tropical paradise. I would stay there for about a week. “
While McGuire was handcuffed and in a patrol car, law enforcement officers found his camouflaged van with a sign reading “Wildlife Field Biologist.”
Near the van, which lawmakers say was illegally parked in an alley behind homes in the Horizon West neighborhood in Orange County, lawmakers met a woman believed to be a friend of McGuire.
Although she initially denied knowing anything about McGuire, the unidentified woman later admitted that McGuire was there to shoot videos for their YouTube channel, according to the body-worn cameras of the deputies.
“I said (McGuire): ‘Look, if you have a problem, list me. I’m not part of it, “the MP’s wife explained.” I love him, but not so much. “
Although McGuire’s criminal case is still being prosecuted, new videos showing him on Discovery Island were posted on his YouTube page last week.
“Fortunately, I took my daughter Disney World before we were banned for life,” McGuire told his 2,300 YouTube subscribers in his latest video. “Who wouldn’t want to go and have everything for themselves?”
